Abstract
Concrete materials and proportions are usually selected to obtain a group of required characteristics of fresh and hardened concrete, for a particular project application. Concrete mix design has major impacts on concrete porosity and water permeability; thus it is a key approach for obtaining watertight and durable concrete. Within this context, this chapter describes the process of material selection and concrete proportioning and summarizes concrete types, grades, and classes. It establishes the required general background of concrete mix design for engineers and researchers dealing with concrete waterproofing technologies and durability issues.
